Mastering the Australian Values Section

In late 2020, the Australian citizenship test was updated to include a special focus on Australian values. This section is arguably the most critical part of the entire exam.

Why is this section so important?

While the overall passing score for the citizenship test is 75%, there is a specific rule for the Values section: You must answer all five questions in this section correctly. If you miss even one question about Australian values, you will fail the test, even if you get every other question right.

What are the core Australian values?

The test focuses on several key principles that underpin Australian society:

1. Parliamentary Democracy

Australia is a representative democracy. This means that Australian citizens vote for people to represent them in parliament and make laws on their behalf.

2. The Rule of Law

In Australia, all people are equal under the law. No person or group is above the law, including govt officials, police, and community leaders.

3. Freedom of Speech and Association

Australians are free to say and write what they think (within the law) and to gather with others to protest or discuss ideas.

4. Freedom of Religion and Secular Government

Australia has no official state religion. People are free to follow any religion they choose, or none at all. The laws of Australia apply regardless of religious beliefs.

5. Equality of Opportunity

Australia is a land of "fair go." This means that what you achieve in life should be a result of your talents, work, and effort, rather than your birthright or heritage.

6. Equality of Men and Women

Men and women have equal rights in Australia. It is illegal to discriminate against someone based on their gender in employment, education, or any other area of life.

How to prepare for Value questions?

The questions in this section often involve "scenario-based" thinking. For example:

  • "Should a person be allowed to follow a law that conflicts with Australian law because of their religion?" (Answer: No)
  • "Is it acceptable for a man to prevent his wife from working?" (Answer: No)

When studying, think about how these values apply to everyday life in Australia. Our mock tests include plenty of Values-specific questions to help you get comfortable with the wording.

Understanding these values is not just about passing a test—it's about understanding the shared commitment all Australians make to each other.
